Please note, I am not going to give any type of spoilers so if you haven't seen the film you don't have to fear. Also if you haven't watched the film or have no interest in the film you are welcomed to not read my review.
Throughout the summer I have seen a few films, two family films: Night in the Museum 2 and Up, I saw two action films that were both very good: X-Men: Wolverine and G.I. Joe, I saw the comedy of the year: Year One, though over the summer I saw Transformers 2 and that was my favorite movie through the summer. I always wondered if there was going to be a film that could come close to or even top Transformers 2. Well earlier today as a late birthday present from my dad took me to do see District 9 since I had been dying to see it. I am very pleased about the movie.
Basic Plot:
District 9, is a rated R sci-fi film based in South Africa, where two decades prior to our present time a large spacecraft broke down over johannesburg. The inside of the craft, contained thousands of aliens who were taken by a secret organization to live amongst people, but through the alien's nature eventually were seperated into a slum district called... okay I'm sure by now you've figured that the district's name is District 9, so I'ma getting right to the chase. District 9 was considered too close close to human population and the aliens were once being moved again. The first 30 minutes of the film is featured sort of like a documantation that follows the main character trying to evic the aliens. A freak accident happens and he winds up as a medical experiment to the secret organization. The rest of the movie loses the documentation feeling and moves into a normal movie while in the last hour and a half has the main character is on the run after escaping experimentation and attempts to get help from one of the aliens named Christapher (Forgive my Spelling) who is on a mission of his own. I am not sayin anymore info than this, you'll have to watch the movie to find out.
CGI:
The aliens were very well done in the film and have a convincing feeling that the aliens actually are there.
Alien Technology/props:
The props of the movie were also verying convincing, and very real like. The main focus around some of the alien technology was actually the alien's weaponry. The best way I can describe the firepower of their weaponry is: Blow shit up, umm let's see here blow shit up, and there's one more... OH yes... BLOW SHIT UP!!!!
Acting:
Acting was very good, the accents of characters were very rich and well done that half the movie had subtitles just to understand some of the people and not just the aliens who spoke in clicks and squeks. There was no poor acting whatsoever in the film.
Warnings:
Please note that if you have a squimish stomach, I do not recommend the film, for the entire film is nothing but blood and guts. Also if you hate large amounts of cursing in movies, well I'm sure you'd be cleaning the gunk out of your ear after hearing the mass of cursing in the movie. Espicially how many times the word FUCK was used... except since the main character had an accent it's more like FOCK!!!
Conclusion:
It's worth the seven bucks and is at least worth watching at least once in your life. I give District 9... 4.7/5... Hell I'll just round up and give it a 5/5.
